Let me introduce myself.I’m
Virginia, wife to Marvin Evers who started Art Connection. We are parents of
four children, two
sons-in-law, and grandparents of five active grandchildren and one grand
son-in-law.
Below
is my tale of two lives. . . . .
I was raised in Enid, Oklahoma,
and Marvin grew up in a farm and ranch community twenty miles nearby.Although he helped his father farm wheat and
raise cattle, he excelled in fitting cattle as an FFA teenager achieving the
Master Farmer Award at GarberHigh School which became
known as ‘Home of the Champions!’In
fact, he had champion shorthorn and angus steers simultaneously at the Oklahoma CityState Fair, a fete never accomplished
before! (or since?)Uncle Sam called him
to the army, and while serving in Japan, he couldn’t wait to get back home to
the show cattle business.
I'm
not claiming to be ‘The Million Dollar Baby at the Five and Ten Cents
Store,’but while working at F. W.
Woolworth after school one day, a 'certain young cowboy’ came in to ‘look me
over’ which started our 15 month courtship. He worked hard at a well known ranch traveling with show cattle all over
America until his 'big
break' came as herdsman for a ColoradoHereford Ranch. After convincing me to marry six months
earlier than planned, we set off to begin a new life in his almost paid for
used '41 Chevy.Little did I know, that
the Roy Rodgers and Dale Evans movies I had seen of a leisurely horseback ride
in the pastures, checking and moving cattle, and ending the day on the front
porch singing to a guitar was not a true picture of a cowboy’s lifestyle!Far from it, indeed.
Working 7 days a week, we raised 5 children, won lots of ribbons and
trophies at cattle shows and sold a lot of cattle for three different ranch
owners.After 20 years, like most
ranchers, his chronic back problems could not be solved, and doctors prescribed
a change of vocation. So, we ventured on
to a new lifestyle when Marvin became a District Representative for AAL, the
most successful fraternal insurance society in America. Many honors came his way the next 20
years. However, that all changed with a
birthday gift.Virginia gave him a
limited edition print of a Hereford calf by Wayne Baize, and months later, he
bought a group of prints benefiting West Texas Rehabilitation Center in
Abilene, Texas where we lived. As he
traveled with the insurance business, he started visiting art galleries, and
you guessed it!He became addicted to
buying ‘just one more’.(Virginia coined a new
word calling him an ‘art-a-holic’!)
One
day, an art broker called wanting Marvin to sell a print from his private
collection.That was the beginning of
'Art Connection'.It became such an
exciting experience not only to seek out the best art, but also to sellit, helping other people enjoy it, that he
retired at an early age from insurance and devoted all of his energy to the new
art business. In fact, he was so
successful, that in 1989 he insisted I quit my Real Estate career and help him full time at
home.My previous experience in sales,
bookkeeping, advertising, brokering real estate and serving in various church
positions were suddenly being applied to all aspects of the art business.
Always
being very involved in church life, and busy with the art, we decided to move
to Houston in
2000 to ‘watch’ our grandchildren grow up.We continue to enjoy meeting new friends locally, and those in other
states, as we solve their art problems, whether it be a new work of art, a rare
one we have to search for, or just custom framing their family portraits and
art for their homes and offices. People in the USA, Canada, England and a few other countries enjoy our services.
Well,
there you have ‘The Rest of the Story’!With 27 years behind us in his 3rd career of art business, Marvin is
still going very strong.Don’t forget to
view the rest of our website, and you’ll see how Marvin keeps busy. We’re here to answer your questions and
ponder your suggestions.So enjoy our
website, and give us a call! soon!
Ya’ll come back, ya’ hear?

Virginia Evers,
